Review: Preston Symphony Orchestra (PSO) Twenty fifth annual youth concerto competition.

Sunday the 9th of September saw the Preston Symphony Orchestra (PSO) hold it’s annual youth concerto competition. The contest which began in 1988 entered its twenty fifth year on Sunday. The competition was adjudicated by Michael Loftus-Hill. The orchestra was conducted by Mario Dobernig.
Six soloists between ages 15 and 18 were featured in an afternoon of high calibre performances. The soloists and their performances were:

Rachmaninov Piano concerto No 2 in C min
Michael Li was the overall winner, whilst Laurence Matheson was awarded the inaugural Audience choice award. Both Li and Matheson played distinguished performances in a tough competition. Both showed maturity and poise beyond their years.
The orchestra next performs on Sunday 2 December 2012 at the Preston town hall where they will perform the Rutter Magnificat for choir and solo soprano with Victoria Chorale and the Tchaikovsky orchestral suite no 2 in C.
